Washington DC makes deal, keeps Capitals
On Tuesday, Washington D.C. unanimously approved the allocation of more than $500 Million for renovations to Capital One Arena as part of a plan to keep both the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals in area until at least 2050. The issue between Washington D.C. and the Washington Capitals (along with the Wizards) stemmed from the team owner, Ted Leonsis, desiring a new arena. Negotiations with Virginia offered a potential location in Alexandria, but those talks fell through for Virginia.
Under the approved allocations signed via a letter of intent, the funding will be used to bring modernization to the arena and its surrounding area. The project is set to include 200,000 square feet of expansion of the arena complex into the nearby Gallery Place space, the creation of an entertainment district in the surrounding neighborhood and safety and transportation upgrades.
This outcome will have significant positive impacts on economic development, public safety, and overall District energy and spirit generated by the millions of people who attend games, shows, and concerts at Capital One Arena
Officials in Virginia were quick to critique the process, assign blame, and express disappointment after losing the opportunity for their state. While Virginia Governor Youngkin blamed Democrats for blocking the project, both Democrats and Alexandria officials refuted his claims. The project's demise is a blow to the Governor and local business leaders, who touted the economic benefits, but faced concerns about financing and local impact.
We made mistakes. I know the governor made mistakes. Monumental made mistakes. JBG made mistakes. And I’m sure the General Assembly made mistakes
Ryan Hartman suspended 3 games
Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman has been suspended for 3 games for his Unsportsmanlike Conduct during their game on Saturday. As the game was ending, Hartman began verbally berating an official and threw his stick on the ice.
Hartman is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement as, in his 574 game NHL career, he has been suspended 3 times and fined 7 times for on-ice conduct. Based on his average annual salary, he will forfeit $62,195.13. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
