Flyers head coach suspended
Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella was suspended two games and fined $50,000 for his unprofessional conduct directed at the officials in Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tortorella was ejected less than 11 minutes into the first period after the fourth goal was scored by Tampa Bay and several penalties had been called against the Flyers, including a 10 minute game misconduct.
Tortorella will miss the Flyers’ next two games — March 12 versus the Sharks and March 14 versus the Maple Leafs. The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.
Rempe suspended 4 games
New York Rangers forward Matt Rampe was suspended for four games without pay for elbowing New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler in the head Monday night in New York.
The incident occurred in the second period with just under one minute remaining. The on-ice officials issued a 5 minute major and a 10 minute game misconduct for the hit. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Rempe will forfeit $17k which will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
2024 Draft may occur at The Sphere
Details are in the works to finalize a deal to hold the 2024 NHL Draft at the iconic Sphere in Las Vegas. Tuesday, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority approved a sponsorship of $500k. Back in December 2023 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman originally announced the opportunity. The dates of the draft are expected to fall on or about June 28-29.
Flames drop RonniThe Calgary Flames have renounced their rights to draft Topi Ronni after he was sentenced for rape. The 19 year-old was sentenced to a one-year suspended sentence in his native land of Finland for an act he committed years earlier as a minor. The Flames drafted Ronni 59th overall in the 2022 draft. | Kraken make custom merch for Eberle’s 1,000th gameThe Seattle Kraken wore special Eberle T-shirts in honor of the forward’s career milestone as they arrived at Climate Pledge Arena before their game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Eberle is in his 14th NHL season and 3rd with the Kraken. |
A Bold(y) play
The Minnesota Wild need as many points as they can get during the last several weeks of the regular season to make it into the playoffs with a wildcard spot. But what they pulled off has not been done often and even fewer times successfully. They pulled their goalie in overtime in an attempt to seal the win. But the catch is, if they would have lost the puck and been scored on, they would have also lost the additional point from overtime.
