Seattle become 1st team to hire female coach

The Seattle Kraken have announced the hiring of Jessica Campbell as the league's first-ever full-time female coach.

The 32-year-old native of Rocanville, Saskatchewan will be behind the bench as a part of new head coach Dan Bylsma's staff after serving as an assistant with the Kraken's American Hockey League affiliate in Coachella Valley, California for the past two seasons.

Campbell previously made history in July 2022 by becoming the first woman to work as an assistant coach in the AHL, the NHL’s minor league affiliate.

Campbell played collegiate hockey at Cornell University and went on the skate with the Calgary Inferno of the professional Canadian Women's Hockey League and the Malmö Redhawks of Sweden's Damettan women's pro league. She also was named the MVP of the 2010 IIHF World Championship tournament as she led the competition in scoring and helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal.

Capitals make management moves

After a decade at the helm of the Washington Capitals, Brian MacLellan stepped aside as the team’s general manager, the Capitals announced Monday morning.

Chris Patrick, who has worked closely with MacLellan for the past three years and been with Washington for 16 seasons, will take over the day-to-day operations as general manager and become senior vice president.

MacLellan will remain the president of hockey operations, overseeing the front office but not running the organization on a daily basis.

“Chris is a dedicated and hard-working executive, who is fully prepared for this next step in his career. His vision, extensive experience, hockey acumen, and player evaluation make him the perfect leader to drive our team forward. We are confident that he will thrive in this new role.”
