Rangers and Devils brawl
The New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils started Wednesday night’s game with a brawl involving all 10 players on the ice just seconds after the opening faceoff. The rough and rowdy event was triggered by Rangers forward Matt Rempe taking on New Jersey’s Kurtis MacDermid, with the two having history from the previous time the Devils visited Madison Square Garden on March 11. That night, Rempe refused MacDermid’s offer to fight early in the game. Later in the contest, Rempe knocked Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler out of the game with a high elbow and was subsequently suspended for four games.
ECHL terminates Growlers team
The ECHL announced on Tuesday that the League’s Board of Governors has voted to terminate the Membership of the Newfoundland Growlers, effective immediately, for failure to fulfill its obligations under the ECHL Bylaws. In an interview with St. John's radio station VOCM, Dean MacDonald, chair of Deacon Sports and Entertainment, majority owners of the Growlers and Trois Rivières Lions, said they had proposed a sale of both teams, but only the latter had been saved.
We are saddened to lose ECHL hockey in the Newfoundland market
The Growlers ceased operations immediately, canceling their final six games of the season — three against the Trois-Rivieres Lions, three against the Norfolk Admirals. They finish the season with a 28-28-10 record. The ECHL and Professional Hockey Players’ Association have agreed that all ECHL-contracted players on the Newfoundland roster are now unrestricted free agents. However, no ECHL member may sign more than two players from the free agent pool of players.
Jenner family mourns stillbirthColumbus Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner and his wife, Maggie, are mourning the loss of their first child after revealing on social media their son was stillborn a month before his due date. The NHL veteran shared the devastating news in a joint statement with his wife on social media. | NHL Linesman Ryan Galloway retiresWinnipeg-born linesman, Ryan Galloway, has officially put on his stripes for the last time. Around 200 friends and family were in attendance to celebrate Galloway’s momentous 1,406th game, where he was honoured by both teams for his storied 22-years in the league. Both the Kings and the Jets presented me with a signed jersey from the entire team. In true Manitoba fashion, he’s also looking forward to spending some quality time with his wife at their Betula Lake cottage. |
