Maple Leafs cut ties with Murray

The Toronto Maple Leafs are getting set for the 2024-25 season by placing multiple key names on waivers. With rosters due across the NHL in a little over 24 hours, the Maple Leafs have placed goalie Matt Murray and defenseman Marshall Rifai on waivers.

It was a big day for waiver activity and the Maple Leafs placed arguably two of the biggest names in Murray and Rifai.

Murray recently signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs after losing the entire 2023-24 season due to bilateral hip surgery. Ever since winning the Stanley Cup in back-to-back seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Murray has struggled to find smooth waters.

Between 2021 and 2023, Murray has only appeared in 73 games with a 29-33-5 record, .900 save percentage, and 3.15 goals against average.

The Maple Leafs will likely open the 2024-25 season with Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz.

Geekie suspended one game

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Conor Geekie was suspended for one preseason game Thursday over his role in a fight during a preseason game with the Florida Panthers.

According to NHL Player Safety, Geekie, the 11th pick in the 2022 draft, violated Rule 70.2 on Wednesday when he left the bench on a legal line change "for the purpose of starting an altercation."

Geekie, who had a hearing was ineligible for Friday's preseason game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

NHL plans CBA talks for 2025

Commissioner Gary Bettman said the NHL will open collective bargaining agreement talks with the players at the start of 2025 and is optimistic about getting a deal done.

The current CBA expires Sept. 15, 2026. Bettman informed the league's board of governors about opening negotiations during their meeting Tuesday in New York.

"In terms of timing that's probably the most realistic, which is still well in advance [of its expiration]," Bettman said. "In terms of the relationship, we think we're in a good place."

NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh recently started his tour of all 32 teams to better understand what the players want out of the next CBA. This will be the first agreement negotiated by Walsh, who took over for Don Fehr in February 2023.
