Leafs hire Berube as new coach
Craig Berube was hired as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.
The 58-year-old replaces Sheldon Keefe, who was fired on May 9.
He will be tasked with getting the Leafs' offensively gifted — and playoff-challenged - core led by Auston Matthews - to the next level with Toronto having lost eight of nine series dating back to 2017.
Berube had served as an analyst with Turner Sports since being fired by the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 12.
He spent 6 seasons with Blues before being fired in December, won Cup in 2019
Berube is 281-190-72 in 543 regular-season games coaching the Philadelphia Flyers and Blues.
He's 27-31 in 58 Stanley Cup Playoff games and guided St. Louis to the Stanley Cup in 2019.
Barkov wins Selke trophy, again
Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov has won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward.
Barkov, 28, is a two-time Selke winner after also winning the award in 2021.
The Selke Trophy, also known as the Frank J. Selke Trophy, is awarded annually to the National Hockey League forward who excels most in the defensive aspects of the game. So, it goes to the forward who is a defensive powerhouse!
The winner is chosen by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association after the regular season concludes. The trophy itself is named after Frank J. Selke, who was a general manager for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens. Interestingly, it was first awarded in 1977, making it the last of the major NHL awards named after figures from the league's "Original Six" teams
