Seattle Kraken fire Hakstol
The Kraken shook up their coaching staff by parting ways with Dave Hakstol, who led them to their first playoff appearance last year. Despite being a finalist for the NHL's Coach of the Year, Hakstol faced dismissal after a disappointing season that saw the team miss the playoffs and perform below expectations. Hakstol had his contract extended just last year.
The Kraken finished with 19 fewer points in 2023-24 and missed the playoffs by 17 points. The season featured a slow start, a 13-game point streak, an eight-game win less streak, a nine-game winning streak around the Winter Classic and another eight-game slide in March.
"We seemed to be up and down more-so this year than we had been," general manager Ron Francis said in a news conference.Kraken GM Ron Francis thanked Hakstol for his dedication but emphasized the need for change to drive improvement within the team.
I thought we were a little more inconsistent than we had been, a few too many losing streaks, and losing streaks of significant numbers. And so, we just felt it was time to try a new voice here.
Brenden Dillon makes recovery after gash
Winnipeg Jets defenseman Brenden Dillon received reassuring news after sustaining a bloody gash to his hand during a scuffle at the end of Friday night's game against the Colorado Avalanche. Jets coach Rick Bowness confirmed that while Dillon is day-to-day and sat out Sunday's game, there is optimism that he could return for Game 5 on Tuesday. Despite the severity of the injury and the need for caution due to extensive stitching, Bowness noted Dillon's eagerness to return to the ice, highlighting the defenseman's importance to the team's playoff efforts.
Rangers sweep Capitals in round 1
The New York Rangers showcased their dominance over the Washington Capitals in a decisive Eastern Conference First Round sweep. With a straightforward 4-2 win in Game 4, the Rangers secured their ticket to the second round, where they await either the Carolina Hurricanes or the New York Islanders. Led by strong penalty killing and power-plays, the Rangers outplayed the Capitals in every facet of the game, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the ice.
The Rangers demonstrated resilience and skill, shutting down the Capitals' power play and capitalizing on their own offensive opportunities. The result not only highlights the Rangers' hockey prowess but also underscores the unpredictable nature of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where regular-season success doesn't always translate to postseason triumphs.
Despite the challenge ahead, their commanding performance in this series has undoubtedly bolstered the Rangers' confidence and set the stage for a promising playoff run. As they prepare for the next round, the Rangers will look to build upon their momentum and continue their winning ways, knowing that their success thus far is just the beginning of what could be a memorable postseason journey.
