Settlement reached with Corey Perry contract
The NHL and the NHL Player’s Association reached a deal today regarding Corey Perry’s contract which was terminated in late November. The terms of the deal are confidential and have not been reported. A grievance was reportedly threatened but never made and instead agreed to a 60 day extension.
The details of the termination itself have been rather mute with few details about what led to it being shared by either the Blackhawks or Perry himself. Perry sought assistance for alcohol use shortly after the contract was terminated and apologized.
Jagr bobblehead heist
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Thursday that a shipment carrying thousands of Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads had been stolen. The team was going to give them away at the game Thursday against San Jose to honor Jagr. Jagr had his number his number (#68) retired last month for the Penguins. The team instead handed out vouchers to the fans which they can pick up at a later date.
Jagr is the NHL’s second all time leading scorer with 1,921 points, and is behind only Wayne Gretzky.
Atlanta group requests a franchise
A group called the Alpharetta Sports & Entertainment (ASE) Group, represented by former NHL player Anson Carter, took steps Thursday to request an NHL expansion team to the Atlanta area. Atlanta was previously home to two teams, the Flames (1972-1980), who moved to Calgary, and the Thrashers (1999-2011), who moved to Winnipeg.
Carter hinted that the ASE Group is also potentially partnering with New York Life for the construction of a mixed-use development in the area where the stadium would be. No details were released about financing or structuring. The league has said there are currently no plans for expansion at this time.
“I’ve lived in Atlanta since 2009, and I have no doubt the best league in the world will thrive in its return to Metro Atlanta”
